Day 1: Tour Itinerary to the Q'eswachaka Inca Bridge

4:00 AM:
Pick up from your hotel in Cusco to travel to the province of Canas. This tour offers a comprehensive exploration of southern Cusco, highlighting its rich history, culture, and natural beauty. Along the way, we will pass by the picturesque Huacarpay Lagoon and the archaeological center of Pikillaqta.

6:30 AM:
Arrival in the Cusipata district for breakfast. After a short break, we will continue our tour visiting the districts associated with Túpac Amaru II, a notable Peruvian indigenous leader who led the “Great Rebellion” against Spanish colonial rule.

We will also pass by the Pabellones Volcano in Yanaoca, a small volcano approximately 4 meters in diameter, where we can enjoy views of the Pampamarca Lagoon.

9:00 AM:
Arrival at Q’eswachaka, located at 3,792 meters (12,440.94 feet) above sea level. Here we will visit the Q’eswachaka Ancestral Bridge, a vital piece of the architectural and cultural heritage of the Quechua people. This bridge, built over the majestic Apurímac River, is a straw bridge that undergoes annual maintenance due to the degradation of the highland climate. The reconstruction is a community effort by local farming communities, ensuring that this cultural treasure is preserved.

The bridge is 33 metres long and 1.20 metres wide and is constructed solely from braided straw (Ichu). The process of creating the QUESWAS (straw ropes) involves sun-drying, beating and flattening the straw, which showcases the incredible craftsmanship of the highland dwellers.

Midday:
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing our return journey

Ccarañahui Caves:
On our way back to Cusco, we will visit the impressive Ccarañahui or Q’arañahui caves. These caves have historical significance, as it is said that the Incas visited them to spiritually communicate with their gods. The presence of a mysterious lake within the cave adds a unique element of intrigue and natural beauty, making it a fascinating stop.
